    1. Nice to have a PHP book available, but I feel the raves are either from the author s buddies or induhviduals who are all too easily impressed This book is probably nice for someone coming to PHP w o any programming background, but lacks the meat to appeal to intermediate and advanced folks Just where is the beef Too many pages are devoted to reprinting of online command docs, with minimal supplementation and examples This is better than a sharp stick in the eye though and compliments the online [...]

    2. Was very excited to finally see a book coming out on php3 Very disappointed now that I have it This book is not much better than a listing of codes The explanations are cursory and not much help to the novice or someone not already familiar with similar programming languages The index is horrific and pretty much useless unless you already know what you re doing so why buy the book Terrible layout overall and not worth buying unless you already have a firm foundation in other programming language [...]

    3. A reader doesn t understand all the 1 star reviews, but after reading most of this book it s obvious to me But don t take my word for it, go check out a copy at your local bookstore or library I m confident you ll agree that, regardless of how nice a guy the author may be, his book is horribly done The flaws are everywhere, in every aspect Frankly, I don t understand how anyone who s not got some ulterior motive could rate this anything above a 2, even on a good day And in case there s any doubt [...]

    4. The book is a good introduction to PHP programming and would probably well serve a beginner Myself, I like to have a book instead of on line docs, and this book is just fine for that.I don t think the 1 star ratings are justified. The advantage that this book has over the on line documentation is that on line documentation is only good if you already understand how to program If you are new to programming, it is good to be shown the basics, which is something this book does well.

    5. This book does not know what it is trying to be it is an OK copy of the online docs but is bulked up lots of space and a BIG font to make it look like it covers a lot of ground This makes it look like a detailed tutorial and this it definitely is not.I came to the book and PHP as a complete novice and found that there was a simple lack of good examples all of the functions are documented but there is little in the way of description as to why you would want to use any of them.At the end of the d [...]

    6. Mr Atkinson is a nice guy but this book was rushed to market, and will be qualitatively beneath the next PHP books As a handy paper source, it is sufficient. After flying through this book, I was comfortably writing 300 line PHP scripts to access Oracle databases and contextually format very complicated web pages My general happiness with life right now is probably due to PHP than to this book. One example of this book s problems function calls are sorted alphabetically Thus, you ll get to closed [...]

    7. As my opinion is worth practically nothing, well I own 2 books Teach yourself C in 21 days by guess who, Leon Atkinson No I never did learn to write C, but It did help me understand other languages I bought Core PHP programming also by Mr Atkinson was great It thought me enough PHP in 1 week to write an interactive database backend site I wonder if he wrote any books on mySQL or if he is planning on it

    8. Look at page 410 where he uses the sybase_dbuse function A handy function, eh It would be, if it existedThis is the kind of bug found throughout the book Clear these up, add a better index and expand some amazingly short descriptions and you ll have a solid book If you re on a budget, stick with the excellent documentation online at php, where it s often easier to find information.
